ImportGenius: LLM company profile generator
Learn how to automate creation of detailed company profiles from Bills of Lading using web scraping and LLMs, enabling scalable research for trade data users.
ImportGenius sells access to a massive repository of global trade data representing the movement of goods around the world (as you can imagine, this is highly topical.) We’ve been experimenting with AI to enrich data and enhance services.
Trade data, which takes the form of billions of Bills of Lading collected from customs agencies, refers to counterparies (importing and exporting companies) by name and sometimes by address. Our customers often want to use trade data specifically to find business entities and learn about them - suppliers, customers, and competitors. Researching companies is time consuming, so enriching this basic data with more information has the potential to deliver a lot of value.
We worked with our lead AI Engineer, Boran al Dabak, to create a company profile generator that scrapes the web using information in a Bill of Lading to flesh out extensive information about the counterparties in a trade transaction. Along with generating one-off company profiles, it can also work in bulk to create dozens or hundreds of profiles. These can in turn be analyzed by an LLM to e.g. identify and rank the top opportunities for new customers or suppliers, etc.
